A mock-up of the Alien puppet was created from a myriad of sketches and models. This working model was only used in test shots to determine if the size, shape, and movement of the puppet would work in the actual filming.

Behind the Scenes - Suiting Up

Tom Woodruff, Jr., dons the latex Alien suit to prepare for a scene calling for a full shot of the Alien. The transformation takes over an hour. Woodruff, along with Alec Gillis, is co-Alien effects designer and creator. Gillis is the one preparing Woodruff for the Alien headpiece.

Behind the Scenes: Ceiling Maneuvers

A team of puppeteers prepare the Alien for filming on the ceiling of the prison facility mess hall. Scenes, such as this one that involve more complicated movements from the Alien, require three people to control the rods for the Alien's different body parts.

A special effects crew member prepares the Alien torso for one of the final scenes in the Lead Works by wetting it down with a solution to give a smokey effect. The torso is controlled by cable mechanisms and is capable of full neck movement.
